Studium der Musikwissenschaft, Sozialpsychologie und Musikpädagogik an der Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien sowie der Universität Hannover. 2003 Master of Arts in Psychology of Music, University of Sheffield. Stipendien des Evangelischen Studienwerks, der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, Forschungsstipendium des Royal College of Music London; 2006 Young Researcher Award der European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music. 2007 Promotion an der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, dort 2007-2008 wiss. Mitarbeiter für Systematische Musikwissenschaft. 2008-2010 Research Fellow, Royal Northern College of Music Manchester. 2010-2013 Vertretungsprofessor an der Universität Bremen. Seit 2013 Professor für Systematische Musikwissenschaft an der Universität Hamburg. Im WS 2018/19 Visiting Researcher an der University of California San Diego.
