Courses at the Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies
The Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies currently offers the following degree programmes
- Bachelor of Arts Empirische Kulturwissenschaft (ehemals "Volkskunde/Kulturanthropologie") in the major and minor subject
- Master of Arts Empirische Kulturwissenschaft (ehemals "Volkskunde/Kulturanthropologie")
The institute's courses offer fundamental, general and in-depth subject-specific knowledge of cultural analysis. At the beginning of the programme, the focus is on methods and perspectives of empirical ethnographic research and cultural theories. Building on this foundation, courses address current fields of research, innovative methods, and more complex theories. The interdisciplinary "Studium Generale" curriculum at the University of Hamburg also provides insight into other subject areas.
In addition, there is the option of acquiring an additional qualification in museum management. Further information can be found at:
Focus on "Research-based learning"
The central element of the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Empirical Cultural Studies is the practical application of methodological approaches and their connection with theoretical perspectives of empirical cultural analysis. In the Bachelor's programme, this takes place within the framework of "research-based learning" and in the Master's programme in research seminars.
Students familiarise themselves with key survey methods and analysis techniques used in ethnographic and historical research approaches and develop different media formats and presentation forms in which they can present their research findings.
