Institutskolloquium
QUEERING PUBLIC – Public anthropology between research, activism and memory
Wednesday, 4 - 6 pm (ct)
ESA West, Room 220
Coordination: Florian Helfer
The colloquium of the institute Queering Public is dedicated to public anthropology, queer epistemologies and debates on memory-politics . The focus is on practices of researching, discussing and remembering queer lifeworlds.
We understand the concept of ‘queering’ as a process and a call to critically question and break down conventional categories. ‘To challenge and break apart conventional categories’ (Doty 1993). The term ‘public’ refers to the committed and transdisciplinary nature of the event series. It is not only dedicated to academic discourse, but also aims to actively participate in social negotiation processes.
The colloquium promotes collaborative, power-critical knowledge production that brings together research, teaching and social engagement. It is aimed at academics, artists, activists and students who work from a queer perspective on public sphere, memory and cultural belonging – and who want to not only reflect on these topics theoretically, but also shape them practically.
The colloquium is intended as a space for resonance for researchers, artists, activists and students who discuss and explore public memory, urban appropriation and the politics of everyday life from a queer, power-critical perspective. In addition to lectures and discussions, the series also includes workshops in which students work with invited participants to develop a concept for the ‘Pavilion of Voices. (Pavillion der Stimmen) This artwork is to be established as a Hamburg queer memorial and place of reflection on sexual and gender diversity and serve as a utopian archive of lived queer experiences.
The colloquium focuses on practice-oriented workshops that enable a conceptual engagement with the Pavilion of Voices. In order to ensure an intensive and productive working atmosphere, the number of participants is limited. We therefore ask that you register early by emailing florian.david.helfer@uni-hamburg.de.
*Please register with the coordinator, especially for the workshops!
