Studying abroad during your degree is a great opportunity to broaden your horizons and gain further qualifications at the same time. Whether you prefer a more theoretical approach through studying abroad or a more practical approach through internships, there are a wide variety of options available so that everyone can find what suits them best. The Erasmus+ programme offers the opportunity to explore other European countries, while the Central Exchange Programme and the Hamburglobal scholarship enable students to participate in exchanges worldwide. All programmes offer both administrative and financial support to make your stay abroad possible.
Further information can be found on the website of the International Office.
Note: This video was created for the 2020/21 application phase. However, the basic information also applies to subsequent application rounds. Further updated information and the relevant forms can be found on the International Office website.

Erasmus+ at the Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies
The Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies strives to give students an international perspective in their studies. To this end, it maintains direct ERAMUS+ partnerships with various partner institutions within Europe, enabling students to take courses focused on empirical cultural studies at other universities.
Current collaborations of the Institute:
- Basel, Switzerland:
- Graz, Austria:
- Copenhagen, Denmark:
- Murcia, Spain:
- Mytilene, Greece:
- Porto, Portugal:
- Vienna, Austria:
- Zurich, Switzerland:
Nomination for an exchange place is not limited to grade point average alone and is open to all students. As a rule, two places are offered per semester and partner university. Individual coordination and content-related consultation is provided by Florian Helfer's ERASMUS+ advisory service at the institute, while organisational support is provided by Julia Rabiul from the Erasmus Office for Humanities at the faculty.
The International Office website provides information on what exactly you need for your application, what to include in your letter of motivation, and many other questions and answers relating to an Erasmus stay.
LETTER OF MOTIVATION
A meaningful letter of motivation is part of an application. In your letter of motivation (one to two pages in German), explain why you are qualified for a stay abroad at your desired university (e.g. previous study experience, language skills in the language of instruction there, interest in a specific profile of the partner university). The focus should be on your academic motivation rather than your leisure activities.
Please address the following aspects:
-
Describe your reasons for wanting to study abroad and your choice of country and partner university. The letter of motivation should refer to your first-choice university and it should be clear that you have already researched this partner university thoroughly.
-
Explain your study plans in detail, focusing in particular on your academic interests and the feasibility (and, if applicable, the necessity) of studying abroad.
-
How does studying abroad fit into your degree programme? How will studying at the partner university deepen your existing knowledge or provide you with new academic insights?
internship
Erasmus+ internship
In addition to studying abroad through Erasmus, there is also the option of completing an Erasmus+ internship abroad. This is a great opportunity, especially for BA students, to look abroad for their compulsory internship in module M9.
Here you will find further information on the general conditions for an Erasmus internship, or you can contact the relevant contact persons at the institute.
