PhD Research Project
- Migrant imaginaries at a crossroads: A comparative analysis of high skilled migrants in the cities of Hamburg and Berlin (Working Title)
In the decision-making process to migrate, individuals create an image of their potential place in a different social context. Migrant imaginaries are thus created and subject to change over time as pre- and post-migration realities confirm or confront initial visions, potentially influencing integration strategies. These divergent or conforming migrant imaginaries are at the center of this dissertation project. To study the changing nature of these and their implications for integration, an ethnographic study on the specific case of two high skilled migrant groups in the cities of Hamburg and Berlin is being undertaken. This criterion will allow for a comprehensive analysis on elements that influence imaginaries and integration strategies that will go beyond the factor of nationality, focusing on key elements such as individual educational and professional backgrounds. The findings of this dissertation aim to uncover migrant integration patterns and to contribute both theoretical and practical considerations in migration and urban studies in addition to serving as a comparative guideline to migrants and local actors alike.
