“Nackte Jungs sind Anthropologie”: Bad Gays, Primitivism, and the Popular Sciences of Anthropology and Homosexuality
Focusing on Wilhelm von Gloeden and Sascha Schneider, two artists whose troubled and problematic work bridged the new popular sciences of sexology and anthropology at the turn of the 20th century in Germany, this lecture explores what so-called “bad gays,” evil and complicated queers in history, can teach us about how today’s gay subjectivities came to be.
