Gabriel Zacarias is Professor of Art History at the University of Campinas (Brazil) and Visiting Professor at Hamburg University as a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung in Germany. He has been a Fellow of the Erasmus Mundus European Program, in Italy and in France, and a Visiting Fellow at Yale University. Specialized in the history of postwar avant-gardes, he is an expert of the Situationist International, being among the first scholars to have studied Guy Debord's archives at the French National Library and the Situationist Papers at the Beinecke Library. On that topic, he has edited the volume "The Situationist International: a Critical Handbook" (London: Pluto Press, 2020), together with Alastair Hemmens. He has equally presented Guy Debord’s notes on literature, on the series edited by the French National Library “La Librairie de Guy Debord” (Échappée, 2019). His most recent book is “Crítica do espetáculo: o pensamento radical de Guy Debord” (Elefante, 2022). He has published essays on the domain of Critical Theory, notably 'No espelho do terror: jihad e espetáculo' (São Paulo: Elefante, 2018), and "De Virus Illustribus. Crise du coronavirus et épuisement structurel du capitalisme" (Crise et Critique, 2020), coauthored with A. Jappe, C. Homs and S. Aumercier, later translated and published in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Brazil.
At the University of Campinas, he supervises researches in the History of Modern and Contemporary Art, with focus on critical approaches to modernism, transnationality and exhibitions history. He has himself written on the history of Bienal de São Paulo and Kassel’s documenta. He also curates art exhibitions at the university campus and in partnership with other museums. In that frame, he was among the authors contemplated with the Art Essay Prize of the Brazilian Literary Chamber for his collaboration with the catalogue “AI-5 : 50 years – It’s not over yet”, an exhibition at the Instituto Tomie Ohtake concerning art and resistance during the years of military dictatorship.
In France, he has been an editor of the journal “Marges. Revue d’art contemporain” (Presses Universitaires de Vincennes) and is a now a collaborator of “Jaggernaut” (Association Crise et Critique). In Brazil, he is the coordinator of the book series “Crise e Crítica” (Editora Elefante).
